Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern about the company meeting that we had in your hotel last week.
Firstly, our staff liked the room that you provide us. It was very big and clean. Furthermore, the chairs were very comfortable and the WiFi service was so smooth that they finished their meeting without any problem.
Unfortunately, they were unhappy with the food that your staff served. We asked in advance to your staff to prepare half veg meal because in my team most of people don't eat meat. But there was very limited options for them and they can't eat properly. With this, the salad was not fresh, speacially lettuce. Drinks that you served had huge amount of sugar that most of staff members didn't take a sip.
I would like to suggest you that in future try to prepare healthy food for your guests. And add more options for the vegatrian people.
Thank you for your time. If you would like to ask more information about that I am happy to tell you.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately concerned purpose. You identify what participants appreciated—the large, clean room, comfortable chairs and reliable Wi-Fi—and explain their dissatisfaction with limited vegetarian choices, stale lettuce and sugary drinks. You also offer a relevant recommendation to provide healthier food and more vegetarian options. These details support the main points and make the complaint specific. To develop the response further, explain more directly how the hotel could act on the feedback, such as confirming dietary requirements beforehand or offering a varied menu with fresh ingredients and lower-sugar drinks. The suggestions are relevant but remain somewhat general, so more precise follow-up would make the ideas more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, positive feedback, problems with lunch, recommendations and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore” and “Unfortunately” make the progression easy to follow. The details within the food paragraph also move logically from dietary needs to salad and drinks. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, particularly the repeated use of “And” to begin the final recommendation and “With this” to connect the food complaints. The closing sentence about providing more information is appropriate, though it could connect more smoothly to the request for improvement. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references between related points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and include relevant terms such as “participants,” “limited options,” “salad” and “vegetarian.” However, several word choices, collocations and spelling errors make the language less natural and precise. For example, “the WiFi service was so smooth” is an unusual collocation, while “half veg meal” and “huge amount of sugar” are imprecise. “Speacially” and “vegatrian” are misspelled, and “most of people” is not a natural expression. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit the range and control shown. Aim for precise phrases such as “vegetarian meals,” “a wide selection” and “excessively sweet drinks,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences, including the sentence explaining that the team had requested vegetarian meals in advance. Meaning is generally clear, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur across the letter. For example, “the room that you provide us” needs a past-tense verb and a suitable preposition, while “they can't eat properly” shifts from past reporting to the present. In “most of people don't eat meat,” the noun phrase needs an article or possessive, and “I would like to suggest you that” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. These recurring errors reduce accuracy, even though the reader can follow the complaint. Practise consistent past-tense reporting and patterns such as “suggest that you…” or “suggest to you that…”.
