IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you regarding the disappointment shared by our team members. They particularly were not happy with the food.
On 31 October, I had organised a full day meeting in your hotel. The participants really like the ambience and infrastructure including the comfortable seats which allows us to attend meeting for a prolonged time. They specially enjoyed the mid snacks and the coffee which gave them time to relax and provides escape for a while.
Unfortunately, they show a huge dissatisfaction over the food served during a lunch time. In the beginning, all of them seems to be excited and happy. However, they found the food to be not properly cooked. Italian curd curry seems to be prepared with stale curd and veggetables. Although the bread was cold, even after making a special request to the waiter, they did not make any effort to improve the situation.
I would request you to take proper investigation on this matter.
I would appreciate it if a senior staff member could look into this issue and take appropriate action to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Yours sincerely
Aashima Mahajan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter addresses the main situation and gives relevant details: participants liked the hotel’s ambience, facilities and comfortable seats, while the lunch was criticised for apparently stale ingredients and cold bread. However, the final task point is not fully answered. You ask for an investigation and appropriate action, but do not clearly suggest practical ways to improve future meals, such as checking food freshness and temperature or responding promptly to requests. The positive feedback about the hotel is also more fully described than the proposed remedy. The purpose is understandable, but the opening focuses on disappointment rather than clearly framing the letter as feedback after the meeting. Develop each requested point more evenly and make the recommendations explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, describes the hotel’s positive features, explains the lunch problem, and closes with a request for action. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and transitions such as “Unfortunately” and “However” signal the contrast effectively. This gives the response a coherent structure, while some links and references are less smooth. For example, “In the beginning” is not clearly connected to the later complaint, and “they” in the opening could refer more precisely to the team members. The two final requests also repeat the idea of investigating and taking action. To strengthen cohesion, connect the sequence of events more directly and combine the closing requests into one focused recommendation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “ambience,” “prolonged,” “dissatisfaction,” and “appropriate action.” These choices help convey both the positive experience and the specific food concerns. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “inform you regarding the disappointment,” “mid snacks,” and “take proper investigation.” “Italian curd curry” is specific, but the description would be clearer if the food item and its condition were expressed more naturally. The spelling “veggetables” is also inaccurate. Aim for precise, conventional phrases in formal correspondence, and check spelling and collocations so that your vocabulary sounds natural as well as varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, including the conditional request “I would appreciate it if a senior staff member could look into this issue.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “participants really like” shifts into the present tense when describing a past event, while “the comfortable seats which allows” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “all of them seems,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject, and “during a lunch time” uses an unnecessary article. Review tense consistency when recounting the meeting and check agreement and article use. These corrections would make the otherwise clear message more accurate.
