Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to exprss my dissatisfaction regarding food service that I have recieved on my recent all-day meeting event in your hotel. I have recieved ample of bad review from my participants.

First of all, I wanted to appreciate your hotel's friendly ambience and extra ordinary support staff. Every things was well planned and organized. I have enough seating arrangement and electricity supply for charging laptops and projectors.

I want to bring you attention towards the negative feedback that I have read regarding food. The food was not freshly made, it was dry and hard to chew. Such as chicken with butter rice; rice was not warm and chicken was over cooked.

There are some suggestion to make your guests feel welcomed, serve warm and properly cooked food. always check temprature.

Best regards

Jaspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three points: you praise the hotel’s “friendly ambience” and support staff, explain that the lunch was dry and not warm, and recommend serving warm, properly cooked food. The specific example of chicken and rice makes the complaint relevant. However, the positive feedback is not clearly tied to the meeting participants, and the improvement advice is very brief; suggestions such as checking food temperature are not developed into a clear request to the manager. The letter also contains 139 words, below the required 150, so the response feels underdeveloped. Add detail about what participants valued and give practical, courteous recommendations for future meals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a generally clear sequence: purpose, positive comments, complaint, and recommendation. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and transitions such as “First of all” and “I want to bring you attention” signal the shift to the food issue. This coherent overall arrangement supports the reader’s understanding. To make the progression more natural and cohesive, connect the feedback more explicitly to the participants and develop the final paragraph rather than ending abruptly with “always check temprature.” Some linking is also mechanical, and the example introduced by “Such as” is not smoothly integrated into the preceding sentence. A more complete closing request would give the letter a stronger finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for a hotel complaint, including “friendly ambience,” “support staff,” “seating arrangement,” and “over cooked.” These choices communicate the main points, and the food description gives useful specificity. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, such as “ample of bad review,” “extra ordinary,” “recieved,” and “temprature.” Some phrases are also unnatural for this context, including “on my recent all-day meeting event” and “bring you attention.” Aim for accurate collocations and a suitably formal register. For example, describe the feedback as “numerous negative comments” and refer to the “lunch served at the meeting.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses mostly short, direct sentences, and the basic message remains understandable. There is an attempt at a longer sentence in “The food was not freshly made, it was dry and hard to chew,” but the two independent clauses are joined with a comma. Other grammatical issues include “I have enough seating arrangement,” where the tense and noun form do not fit the past event, and “There are some suggestion,” which has a plural agreement error. The letter would benefit from a wider mix of accurate sentence forms, including a clear request to the manager. Check articles, verb tense, agreement, and sentence boundaries when revising.
