IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently organised an all-day meeting for your company, which took place in a local hotel. In their feedback, participants at the meeting said that they liked the hotel, but they were unhappy about the food that was served for lunch.
Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter
- say what the participants liked about the hotel
- explain why they were unhappy about the food
- suggest what the manager should do to improve the food in future
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing regarding the recent event held by our company at your hotel, where the overall service was liked by our participants, but the food you provided was not up to expectations.
The employees who were present at this really appreciated the overall facilities of your hotel; they gave an outstanding review for your interior design and the arrangement for their sitting. They were happy with your clean and tidy restroom facilities.
However, they were really disappointed by the cuisine they had during this meeting. Most of them disagreed with its idea of serving and they have negative review of its taste. Some even commented that the food was cooked hours before, as it was not fresh.
I would like you to give some suggestions on this matter. Could you please improve the quality of the food and hire some qualified people to prepare your dishes? Also, it would be appreciated
if you add international cuisine to your menu. I hope you will understand my concern and delight us with the recommended changes.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully.
Bhagwant kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a suitably formal purpose throughout. The positive feedback is specific: participants liked the hotel’s interior design, seating arrangements and clean restrooms. You also explain their dissatisfaction by mentioning taste and concerns that the food had been prepared hours earlier, then offer practical suggestions such as improving quality, hiring qualified staff and adding international dishes. These ideas are relevant and supported, so the response fulfils the task well. Some details could be clearer and more fully developed: “disagreed with its idea of serving” does not explain what was wrong with the way lunch was served, and the proposed improvements would be stronger if linked directly to the complaints, for example by ensuring meals are freshly prepared and offering suitable menu choices.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: purpose and overall feedback, positive features, complaints about lunch, and recommendations. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, while transitions such as “However” and “Also” make the shift between ideas easy to follow. The closing is appropriate for a formal letter. To make the organisation more polished, use clearer links between the reported problems and your recommendations; for instance, connect the concern about freshness directly to a request for food to be prepared shortly before serving. A few references are also vague, particularly “its idea of serving” and “the recommended changes,” so naming the specific issue or change would make the connections between sentences more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “overall facilities,” “interior design,” “cuisine,” “qualified people” and “international cuisine.” These choices communicate the main points, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural collocations that limit precision: “gave an outstanding review for” would be more naturally expressed as “gave excellent feedback on,” while “arrangement for their sitting” is unclear and could be “seating arrangements.” “Disagreed with its idea of serving” is also an awkward way to describe dissatisfaction with the meal or service. Aim to use familiar, precise collocations rather than more elaborate phrases when their meaning is uncertain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening clause “where the overall service was liked” and the conditional request “Could you please improve…?” Meaning remains clear throughout, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In “they have negative review,” the article and plural form need attention; “they had negative reviews” would be clearer. “They were happy with your clean and tidy restroom facilities” is grammatically sound, but the sentence before it has an awkward structure that makes the intended meaning less clear. The closing “Yours faithfully.” should normally take a comma, and the sign-off should be presented consistently. More accurate articles, plurals and punctuation would strengthen control.
