Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for inactivity and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as long working hours and the need for small, achievable goals. However, the development is somewhat limited. The explanation of why people avoid exercise is clear, but the solutions section could be more detailed. For instance, the suggestion of 'rewards' is a good start, but it lacks a broader perspective on societal or workplace interventions. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Moving forward', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Moving forward' to introduce the solutions paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentence-level connections could be smoother to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'lethargic' and 'uphill task', which are used correctly. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing little or no workout' (should be 'getting little or no exercise') and 'give rewards themself' (should be 'reward themselves'). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'majority of working class individuals doing' (missing 'are'), 'without no physical movement' (double negative), and 'make them to avoid' (should be 'make them avoid'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and correct verb patterns.
