Many working people get little or no exercise either during the working day or in their free time, and have health problems as a result.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, many working people have been getting insufficient exercise, which can lead to various health problems. This is mainly because long working hours leave people with less free time, while after work, many people prefer to rest or use their phones and watch TV.

Firstly, long working hours leave people with less free time. People spend most of their day at work, so they have little time to exercise. As a result, they may gain weight, which increases the risk of health problems. For example, an employee who works 9-10 hours a day may feel exhausted and have motivation to exercise after work.

Secondly, many people prefer sedentary activities after work. Many people watch their favourite movies or scroll instagram to relax after a tiring day at work and feel refreshed. As a result, they may become less physically active and increase the risk of obesity. For example, people who spend most of their free time watching TV or using social media may gradually gain weight because they rarely engage in physical activities.

In my opinion, companies should encourage employees to exercise during the working day. One effective solution is to engage employees in different physical activities by organizing games and sports activities. As a result, this could increase the productivity and efficiency. For example, organisations could provide short exercise breaks or create a small gym, allowing employees to spend 30-min exercising and maintaining their fitness.

In conclusion, lack of exercise among working people is mainly caused by long working hours and excessive screen time. However, this problem can be addressed by allowing employees to spend 30 minutes exercising every day.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on long working hours and sedentary habits provides a clear explanation for the problem, while the suggestion of workplace exercise breaks offers a practical solution. However, the development could be more sophisticated; the points are somewhat repetitive, and the examples, such as 'an employee who works 9-10 hours', are quite general. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the implications of these issues more deeply, perhaps by discussing the societal or psychological factors involved in sedentary lifestyles.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the impact of long hours or the role of sedentary leisure. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more varied to improve the natural progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use terms like 'sedentary activities', 'physical activities', and 'productivity and efficiency' correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. For example, 'have motivation' is slightly unnatural; 'lack the motivation' would be more precise. Additionally, 'scroll instagram' should be capitalized as 'Instagram'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, which would help elevate your score toward the band 8 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'have motivation' instead of 'lack the motivation' and the missing article in '30-min exercising'. While you show good control over basic structures, the use of more varied complex sentence forms—such as conditional clauses or passive voice constructions—would demonstrate greater flexibility. Overall, the grammar is accurate enough to support a band 7, as the majority of your sentences are error-free.
