Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people in workforce, find it challenging to accommodate exercise in their routine, and face health issues due to their sedentary lifestyle. This is mainly driven by changing working styles, hectic work schedules, a lack of motivation and unseen mental stress experienced by working people, and there are some practical solutions to this problem.

One of the key reasons is changing work styles in modern times. Since work has become more sedentary and involves sitting when compared to past, individuals feel more fatigued mentally rather physically.

Additionally, the long working hours and commute times which leave many people with no time to exercise in weekdays. Furthermore, the mental exhaustion consumes their free time as well, and leaves them too tired to exercise even on their free days. To exemplify, a working couple, usually gets no time and energy left to exercise while working full-time and looking after their children and home all by themselves.

Consequently, it causes weight gain that results in various physical health and mental illnesses which deteriorate quality of life. The plausible solutions are workload division among family members, flexible work provision by employers, and initiatives to raise awareness by the government. Division of household chores and outsourcing some work can help people get some time for themselves. Freedom of work from home helps to save on time wasted in commute, which can be spent on exercise. The authorities should invest in awareness initiatives to educate people on the physical and mental benefits of exercise to motivate individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

To sum up, while work is becoming more sedentary as compared to past, it drains people both mentally and physically leaving no energy to exercise. Nevertheless, with collaborative efforts from individuals, employers and the state, people can be encouraged to incorporate exercise in their routines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on sedentary work styles and the impact of long commutes provides a clear explanation for the problem. The solutions offered, such as flexible working arrangements and government awareness campaigns, are practical and directly linked to the identified causes. While the development is generally good, some points could be expanded further with more specific examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the position is clear and maintained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, there are minor instances where the flow could be smoother, such as the transition between the discussion of mental exhaustion and the example of the working couple. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the solutions, which aids the reader's understanding.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'fatigued', 'workload division', and 'collaborative efforts'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'unseen mental stress' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'fatigued mentally rather physically' (missing 'than'). Despite these minor slips, the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning precisely, and the student demonstrates an ability to use less common items in a relevant context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and complex structures are attempted, such as 'While work is becoming more sedentary as compared to past, it drains people...'. However, there are some persistent errors, such as missing articles ('in workforce', 'in weekdays') and minor punctuation or prepositional slips. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The majority of sentences are clear, and the grammatical control is generally consistent throughout the text.
