Student answer (Band 7.5)

Many people in the workforce find it challenging to incorporate exercise into their routine, and face health issues due to their sedentary lifestyle. This is mainly driven by changing working styles, hectic work schedules, a lack of motivation and unseen mental stress experienced by working people, and there are some practical solutions to this problem.

The primary catalyst is changing work styles in modern times. Since work has become more sedentary and involves longer periods of sitting, individuals feel more fatigued mentally rather than physically. Additionally, the long working hours and commute times leave many people with no time to exercise on working days. Furthermore, the mental exhaustion consumes their free time as well, and leaves them too tired to exercise even on their free days. To exemplify, a working couple usually gets no time and energy left to exercise while working full-time and looking after their children and home all by themselves.

Consequently, it causes weight gain that results in various physical health and mental illnesses which deteriorate quality of life.

Turning to solutions, the employers can introduce some group workouts at the workplace to promote physical and mental well-being of their employees. Moreover, individuals should actively try to incorporate some form of physical activity in their routine. For instance, outsourcing some domestic responsibilities may assist people to spend some time to exercise. Also, the authorities should invest in awareness initiatives to educate people on the benefits of exercise. They can encourage working people to use local community health centers at subsidized rates to motivate them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

To sum up, while work is becoming more sedentary as compared to the past, it drains people both mentally and physically leaving no energy to exercise. Nevertheless, with collaborative efforts from individuals, employers and the state, people can be encouraged to incorporate exercise in their routines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. You identify key reasons for the lack of exercise, such as sedentary work styles and mental exhaustion, and provide logical solutions involving employers, individuals, and authorities. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of working couples and domestic outsourcing. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the explanation of how specific solutions, such as 'awareness initiatives,' would directly overcome the barriers mentioned, providing a more detailed link between the problem and the proposed action.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The primary catalyst,' 'Additionally,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Turning to solutions.' These transitions help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the causes from the solutions. The referencing is generally clear, though occasionally the flow could be improved by varying the sentence starters even further to avoid a slightly repetitive structure in the second paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'sedentary lifestyle,' 'primary catalyst,' 'deteriorate quality of life,' and 'subsidized rates' show a good command of topic-specific language. There is an awareness of style and collocation, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for an IELTS task. While the range is good, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the language used is natural and fits the context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as 'While work is becoming more sedentary as compared to the past, it drains people...' and 'Since work has become more sedentary...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally strong. There are very few grammatical slips, and the ones present do not interfere with the clarity of your message. To aim for a higher band, ensure that you consistently maintain subject-verb agreement and refine the use of articles, though your current control is already quite solid and demonstrates a high level of accuracy.
