Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this modern era, having little time to exercise because of work has become an increasingly common issue in many countries. This situation has attracted considerable attention due to its negative impact on individuals. This essay will examine the main causes of this problem and propose some effective solutions.

There are several reasons why this issue has become so prevalent. One major cause is a lack of time. This is mainly because of long working hours, and people are not able to exercise after a hectic day at work. Along with this, they also have family responsibilities. Therefore, they do not have enough time and energy for exercise. For example, a person who works eight hours a day in an office may feel exhausted after work and prefer to relax at home instead of exercising. Another contributing factor is sedentary jobs. In other words, many workers work in front of a computer and drive home. Due to this, there are fewer opportunities for physical activity. As a result, they do not get enough physical activity during the day.

To tackle this problem, several measures can be taken. Firstly, the government can encourage exercise by providing parks, walking paths and affordable sports facilities. This would not only help people stay healthy but also be highly beneficial for the environment. In addition, individuals should include exercise in their daily routines, such as walking to work, taking the stairs, or doing physical activities for 20–30 minutes after work, which would generally be beneficial for them.

In conclusion, having no time for physical activities is mainly caused by a demanding lifestyle and a sedentary life. However, by implementing such measures as exercising for a certain amount of time every day and offering public parks, this issue can be addressed successfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the explanation of sedentary jobs and the impact of long working hours provides a clear rationale for the problem. The solutions offered, such as government intervention through infrastructure and individual lifestyle adjustments, are practical and directly linked to the causes mentioned. While the development is clear, it could be further enhanced by providing more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach the higher band descriptors. Overall, the response is well-focused and maintains a consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'As a result' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the causes and the solutions is smooth. The structure is coherent, and the use of referencing is generally clear, which supports the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms such as 'sedentary jobs', 'hectic day', and 'demanding lifestyle' accurately. While the range is adequate for the topic, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or the use of less common idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. However, the word choice is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without any ambiguity. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. For example, the use of conditional structures and complex sentences like 'This would not only help people stay healthy but also be highly beneficial for the environment' shows a good command of language. While there are occasional minor slips, they do not interfere with the clarity of the message. The grammatical accuracy is consistent throughout the text.
