Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has always been a contentious concern that almost every working individual gets little or no exercise while on work premises or at home in their free time. Due to this, health problems such as diabetes, obesity and weight gain are increasing. It is happening due to the heavy workload in office which leaves them with less time to work on their projects and tiredness from hectic schedule on everyday basis. To motivate people to exercise, workers themselves should maintain their work-life-balance and employer should also support their employees by providing some onsite resources.

One of the major reason that people do not get enough exercise is lack of time. Due to the increased expectations from companies regarding better performance and productivity for increasing business profits, individuals prioritize investing more time in office to complete their projects before the given deadlines. Concurrently, they have families and loved ones for whom they need to care about which leave them with no personal time to spend on exercise. In addition to this, their hectic schedule makes them mentally and physically exhausted so it impossible for them to save energy for doing some physical activities for healthy lifestyle. For instance, a doctor who is busy with back-to-back operations, consulting patients, and training junior staff prefers to sit in a couch for whole evening to relax rather than doing exercise. Therefore, less personal hours as well as exhaustion from hectic work make people incapable of doing physical activities.

To cope up with this issue, firstly workers themselves should make some efforts to create better work-life balance so that they can reserve some time for their personal health as well as relaxation. This can be done by providing fixed availability to employers and by sharing household responsibilities with other family members. Additionally, employers should consider investing some profits on onsite resources such as they can provide a treadmill for walk in an office for staff who mostly spend time on calling to customers or companies should organize weekly activities for staff to participate and win prizes. It will not only help individuals to exercise but employers can also increase their business profits by increased productivity.

To conclude, although people are not getting time from busy schedules and are extremely tired from work, they should prefer taking some personal time and employers must support workers by accepting their fixed availability and providing in-office resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the discussion on time constraints and the role of employers. The position is clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the long-term societal implications of these solutions to further extend the arguments. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Concurrently', and 'To cope up with this issue' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the solution. The flow is generally smooth, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to avoid a mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'contentious concern', 'hectic schedule', and 'onsite resources'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'cope up with' (should be 'cope with') and 'sit in a couch' (should be 'sit on a couch'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. The word choice is generally accurate but occasionally repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are recurring errors, such as missing articles ('the' before 'heavy workload', 'a' before 'treadmill') and minor prepositional errors. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'it impossible for them to save energy'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on article usage and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
