Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many individuals have no workout routine, either due to their busy schedule or even during their leisure time, which results in poor health. This essay will discuss the reasons for this practice and possible solutions to the problem.

The primary reason for not prioritizing exercise in a daily routine is that people have an excessive workload, because of which they hardly have time for such heavy lifting after a full day of mundane work. For instance, working from 9 to 5, five days a week, can be extensive, and people tend to utilize the rest days to stay at home or party with friends rather than going to the gym. The other reason may be the unnecessary use of smartphones nowadays, which can kill the precious time one gets on weekends. For example, people are inclined towards doomscrolling all day without thinking that it has detrimental effects on their health.

However, this unhealthy routine can be fixed by reducing work pressure and having a work-life balance by managing time efficiently. For example, companies can be lenient with diligent workers and give the 2nd and 4th Fridays off each month. Furthermore, one can improve their productivity by acquiring healthy habits such as going to bed early or going for a walk early in the morning. If everyone starts following the famous phrase, 'Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise,' they can definitely stay fit even in old age.

In conclusion, excessive work pressure and wasting time on useless stuff are deteriorating people's health. A significant reduction in work and adopting healthy routines will allow people to prioritize their health by going to lift weights regularly. The healthier the lifestyle is, the better the outcomes would be.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of long working hours and the distraction of smartphones. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the suggestion that companies should give employees specific Fridays off is a bit simplistic and lacks a broader perspective on systemic workplace changes. While the position is clear throughout, the arguments could be extended further with more depth or nuanced examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the transition between the discussion of smartphones and the solutions section could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument. The use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'mundane,' 'detrimental,' and 'diligent,' which shows a good range. However, some word choices are slightly imprecise or repetitive, such as 'useless stuff' in the conclusion, which is too informal for an academic-style essay. Additionally, the phrase 'heavy lifting' is used somewhat literally in a context where it might be better to refer to 'strenuous physical activity.' While communication is never impeded, more precise vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the majority of sentences are error-free. Complex structures, such as the conditional sentence in the third paragraph ('If everyone starts following...'), are used correctly. There are minor slips, such as 'the 2nd and 4th Fridays,' which is slightly awkward, and some punctuation could be refined. However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any difficulty for the reader. The control of grammar is consistent, and the range of structures is sufficient to convey the intended meaning effectively.
