Student answer (Band 7.5)

In this contemporary society, a substantial portion of the working population leads an unbalanced lifestyle and they do not have enough time, whether working or in their leisure time, to engage in physical activity to stay healthy. Even worse, this habit causes concerning health problems in the future. This essay will examine the several reasons behind this situation and the considerable measures which organisations, individuals and government can take to eradicate the problem.

One of the foremost reasons for having insufficient exercise is the working environment. Some people spend most of their working time sitting at desks, working extended hours and face considerable pressure. They become physically and mentally exhausted and have insufficient energy left for a workout. Some employees, for instance, sit in front of computers in their workplace and the bare physical movements cause stress to their joints. Thus, when they reach home, they become less energetic for exercise.

Another reason is the growing dependency on technology and private transportation. The usage of personal vehicles such as cars reduces the amount of walking time when going to work or running errands. This may adversely impact their weight gain and other chronic diseases. Similarly, people spend their leisure time scrolling social media platforms or gaming with their friends which reduces their interest in doing exercise. More screen time can overstimulate the brain and eyes.

A multifaceted approach is required to reverse this trend. Firstly, employers play pivotal roles in shaping workplace culture and conditions. Flexible working hours, scheduled movement breaks, standing desks and on-site fitness gyms should be facilitated to employess for their better well-being. Additionally, the government should invest in infrastructure, such as public parks and recreational centres, to keep the public physically active. Public awareness is also necessary to educate individuals about the consequences of not taking health seriously. Moreover, Individuals are responsible for shaping their lifestyle. Modest behavior change can be beneficial. Going to small or evening walks, choosing stairs over elevators are some ways of practicing routine physical movements. Adapting physical challenge activities can certainly enhance their fitness level.

Overall, the hectic working schedule and less active lifestyle in free time can certainly be the reason for major health problems. unhealthy working conditions and personal habbits may lead to increase chronic health issues. However, collective measures of employers, government and individuals could possibly reduce the concern and ensure healthy lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the lack of exercise (work environment, technology, sedentary habits) and proposing logical solutions (employer initiatives, government infrastructure, individual responsibility). The position is clear throughout, and ideas are well-developed with relevant examples. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic, and the arguments are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. The response is well-structured and covers the prompt comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the reasons and the solutions is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the foremost reasons', 'Similarly', and 'A multifaceted approach is required' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is varied and appropriate for the context. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'contemporary society', 'sedentary', 'chronic diseases', and 'multifaceted approach'. While there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'adapting physical challenge activities' (which is slightly awkward), the overall range is sufficient to convey precise meaning. The student demonstrates a good awareness of collocation and style, which contributes to the professional tone of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar and punctuation, with many error-free sentences. However, there are occasional minor slips, such as 'facilitated to employess' (should be 'facilitated for employees') and 'habbits' (spelling error). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The use of complex structures, such as conditional and passive constructions, is generally accurate and adds to the overall quality of the writing.
