Student answer (Band 7.5)

Introduction

Nowadays, many working people do not get enough physical exercise during their working hours or in their free time. This can lead to various health problems. The main reasons for this issue are busy work schedules and tiredness, while employers and individuals can take several steps to encourage a more active lifestyle.

Reasons for the Lack of Exercise

One major reason is that many people have long and demanding working hours. After spending most of the day at work, they often have little time or energy left for exercise. In addition, many jobs require employees to sit at a desk and use a computer for several hours. This sedentary lifestyle reduces their daily physical activity. Another reason is that workers may have family responsibilities after work, such as looking after children, preparing meals, or doing household chores. As a result, exercise is often considered less important than other responsibilities.

Solutions to the Problem

There are several ways to address this problem. First, employers could provide better opportunities for physical activity at the workplace. For example, companies could offer gym facilities, organize short exercise sessions, or encourage employees to take regular walking breaks. Flexible working hours could also help workers find time for exercise. Individuals should also make exercise part of their daily routine. For instance, they could walk or cycle to work, use stairs instead of elevators, or spend 30 minutes walking or exercising after work. Governments can also encourage healthier lifestyles by providing safe walking and cycling paths and promoting public awareness about the benefits of regular exercise.

Conclusion

In conclusion, working people often fail to exercise because of long working hours, sedentary jobs, tiredness, and family responsibilities. However, employers, governments, and individuals can work together to solve this problem. By creating more opportunities and making exercise part of everyday life, people can improve their health and overall quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, such as the mention of sedentary office work and family responsibilities. The solutions provided are practical and clearly linked to the identified problems, including the roles of employers, individuals, and governments. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. The development of ideas is logical and sufficient for the task requirements, demonstrating a clear understanding of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the reasons and the solutions is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Another reason', 'For instance', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear, making the text easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the context. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'sedentary lifestyle', 'demanding working hours', and 'physical activity'. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'uncommon' lexical items that would typically characterize a band 9 response. However, the word choice is consistently natural, and there are no errors in collocation or spelling that impede communication. The range is sufficient to express complex ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional structures ('If...') and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the grammatical range is solid, it does not consistently feature the high-level complexity or flexibility required for the highest band. Nevertheless, the control over grammar is strong, and there are no significant errors that cause confusion or difficulty for the reader.
