Student answer (Band 7.5)
Many working people today do not get enough exercise, which can lead to serious health problems. There are several reasons for this situation, but there are also practical ways to encourage people to be more active.
One major reason is that modern jobs often require employees to sit at a desk for most of the day. After spending eight or more hours at work, many people feel too tired to exercise. In addition, long commutes by car or public transport can further reduce the time available for physical activity. Another factor is the increasing use of technology. People may spend their evenings watching television, playing games or using social media instead of going for a walk or doing sport.
Several measures could help to solve this problem. Employers could provide healthier working environments by offering exercise facilities, organizing short activity breaks and encouraging staff to walk or cycle to work. Flexible working hours could also allow employees to exercise before or after work. At an individual level, people could make small changes, such as taking the stairs, walking during lunch breaks or going for a daily evening walk. These activities do not require much time or money.
For example, a company could encourage employees to take a ten-minute walking break twice a day. Although this seems simple, it could significantly increase their daily physical activity.
In conclusion, busy schedules, sedentary jobs and technology are major causes of inactivity. Both employers and individuals should make small but consistent changes to create a healthier lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly: the reasons for inactivity and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the explanation regarding sedentary desk jobs and the subsequent suggestion of flexible working hours are well-connected. The position is clear throughout, and the response provides a balanced view by discussing both employer-led and individual-led solutions. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples or elaborate further on the potential impact of the suggested solutions to add more depth to the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the causes of inactivity in the second paragraph and solutions in the third. Cohesive devices like 'In addition', 'Another factor', and 'For example' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is logical, moving smoothly from the problem to the solution. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the development of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'sedentary jobs', 'physical activity', and 'healthier working environments' accurately. While the range is adequate to convey ideas clearly, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors in spelling or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Although this seems simple, it could significantly increase their daily physical activity.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the grammatical range is solid, the student could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as more frequent use of passive voice or conditional clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control.
