Student answer (Band 7.5)

Many working people do little or no physical exercise, either during their working hours or in their free time, and this can lead to various health problems. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this issue and suggest several possible solutions.

One of the primary reasons why working people do not exercise enough is their busy and demanding schedules. Many employees spend long hours sitting at desks or standing in workplaces and often feel exhausted by the end of the day. As a result, they may prefer to relax, watch television, or use their phones rather than go to the gym or participate in sports. In addition, modern lifestyles have become increasingly convenient. People frequently drive to work, order food online, and use technology to complete tasks that previously required physical effort.

To address this problem, employers can play an important role in encouraging their staff to become more active. For example, companies could provide gym facilities, organize sports activities, or encourage employees to take short walking breaks during the working day. Employers could also promote walking meetings or offer flexible schedules that allow workers more time for exercise.

Individuals must also take responsibility for their own health. Exercise does not necessarily require spending hours at a gym. Simple activities such as walking, cycling, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or doing a short home workout can make a significant difference when performed regularly. Governments can also help by creating safe parks, cycling paths, and affordable sports facilities, making physical activity more accessible to the general public.

In conclusion, demanding work schedules and increasingly sedentary lifestyles are the main reasons why many working people fail to exercise regularly. This problem can be reduced if employers, governments, and individuals work together to and individuals work together to make physical activity a more convenient and natural part of daily life

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for inactivity and potential solutions. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of modern conveniences like online food ordering and the role of employers in providing gym facilities. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. The structure is logical, moving from the causes to the solutions, which demonstrates a thorough understanding of the task requirements. The response is well-balanced and provides a comprehensive answer to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'To address this problem' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While there is a minor repetition error in the final sentence ('work together to and individuals work together to'), this does not significantly disrupt the flow or clarity of the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'sedentary lifestyles', 'physical effort', and 'accessible'. The language is natural and conveys the intended meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate to express complex ideas without any confusion or significant errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Many employees spend long hours sitting at desks or standing in workplaces and often feel exhausted by the end of the day.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is generally accurate. The minor repetition error in the conclusion is a slip rather than a lack of grammatical control. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is easy to follow throughout.
