Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often observed that the majority of individuals do little or no exercise, whether during the business days or in their leisure time. Therefore, they have health problems. In this essay, I will not only discuss the reasons but also some effective solutions to tackle this problem.

On the one hand, the main cause of not doing physical activities is that it is often noticed that a significant amount of time is spent by individuals at the workplace rather than at home, which does not allow them to engage in exercise. Moreover, due to advancements in technology, people prefer to use their mobile phones to entertain themselves instead of doing physical activities. For example, nowadays people use Instagram Reels in their free time. Therefore, they suffer from obesity and other health issues due to a lack of physical activity.

On the other hand, there are also possible measures to mitigate this issue. Firstly, the government should take some necessary steps, such as fixing working hours for workers as well as building an area for workers where they could exercise in their free time. For instance, in many nations, companies provide gym membership to their employees as a benefit. Secondly, if workers stop using their phones in their leisure time and go to the gym every day, they can stay away from obesity and other health issues. Consequently, people can live a healthy life.

In conclusion, although this problem is caused by employees' hectic schedules and technology, it could be solved by taking some effective measures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant, such as long working hours and the distraction of technology. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the suggestion that workers should simply 'stop using their phones' is a bit simplistic and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or nuanced examples. The position is clear throughout, and the essay structure is appropriate for the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0 or 6.5 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'physical activities', 'leisure time', and 'mitigate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary. For example, instead of 'take some necessary steps', you could use 'implement strategic measures'. The word choice is generally accurate, and there are no significant spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some good attempts at complex sentences, such as 'although this problem is caused by... it could be solved by...'. While there are occasional minor errors, such as 'whether during the business days' (which sounds slightly unnatural), the grammar does not impede communication. The punctuation is generally correct. To achieve a higher score, aim for a greater variety of complex structures and ensure higher accuracy in your sentence construction.
