Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people who are working do not get sufficient time to exercise during the working hours or in their free time which results in a number of health related issues. There are certain factors which contribute to little or no time for exercise like working environment or personal negligence.

The work environment in most of the countries is very hectic and keep the employees fully occupied. Many people can not manage to take out time in their tough schedule and get tired after job hours to do some exercise. This eventually results in sedentary lifestyle which can negatively affect the health. Moreover, on weekends, they have a lot of work to manage at their homes which leaves no time to involve in physical activity. Busy routine makes a person lazy and inactive which leads to a sedentary behaviour. They prefer to spend quality time by watching TV or using social media while relaxing instead of doing exercise or walking. These habits contribute to heart diseases like hypertension, atherosclerosis and musculoskeletal issues like weak muscles and joints.

Governments should encourage workplaces to dedicate some time specifically for the wellness of employees which can include breaks for walk or group exercises. They should also initiate awareness campaigns reflecting on the importance of exercise and healthy lifestyle. Moreover, there should be more community centers where people can access these facilities which motivates to engage in group activities.

In conclusion, a balanced approach that combines an individual effort with workplace support is the most effective way to live a healthy and happy life. This leads to a prosperous society which is physically and mentally well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, you identify 'hectic work environments' and 'personal negligence' as causes, and suggest 'workplace wellness programs' and 'community centers' as solutions. While the ideas are clear, they could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the causes of inactivity or potential solutions. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'This eventually results in', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth; occasionally, the link between the cause (sedentary behavior) and the specific health consequences could be more tightly integrated to improve the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'hypertension', 'atherosclerosis', and 'musculoskeletal issues' are used accurately and appropriately. There is some repetition of basic words like 'time' and 'exercise', but this does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and less common collocations. For example, instead of 'take out time', you could use 'allocate time' or 'carve out time'. The vocabulary is generally natural and fits the formal tone of an IELTS essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'Governments should encourage workplaces to dedicate some time specifically for the wellness of employees'. However, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'keep the employees fully occupied' (should be 'keeps') and 'which motivates to engage' (should be 'which motivates them to engage'). Punctuation is generally correct, and these minor errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with complete clauses.
