Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people do not exercise regularly, which ultimately affects their health and overall well-being. This is mostly because of their busy work schedules, laziness and lack of motivation to exercise. It is necessary to point out the effects of not exercising on the human body because obesity and heart disease are directly related to a lack of physical activity.

There is strong competition in workplace in today's world. A Lack of job opportunities has worsened the situation. As a result, people are working long hours to impress their bosses. In addition some companies provide additional payment for working extra hours, which makes employees eager to work more.

The tendency to work long hours is common as a result, people coming home become tired, and they get little or no time to work out. Also since they are already tired, they prefer to remain sedentary.

People also lack the motivation to work out because exercising alone seems boring. Going everyday to the gym without partner looks like a boring activity. Also, gym memberships are often expensive. They are not willing to spend money for a boring activity.

This sedentary lifestyle ultimately results in various health issues. So, governments, companies and individuals all have vital roles to play in overcoming this problem. Governments should develop areas where people can walk, jog and do some simple exercise. Companies can allocate some space in the offices with simple exercise equipment and also allow employees small break from work to do some exercise. For example, my company has a dedicated space where two treadmills, two cycles and one cross-trainer is provided. Also we are allowed to have a 20 minutes break in the afternoon. This facility allowed us to do some exercise, and it helped up to concentrate more and increased the overall productivity. Individuals also need to be serious and conscious about their own health. They can invite their friends or neighbours to work out together.

Pollutions and quality of food have already made our overall health weak. I believe, it is high time, we realize the effects of exercise and start taking necessary measures to have a healthy life, and exercise is the key to lead a healthy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the lack of exercise and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the personal example regarding workplace facilities. However, the essay could be improved by expanding on the 'laziness' point, which is mentioned in the introduction but not fully explored in the body paragraphs. The position is clear throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that all points mentioned in the introduction are given sufficient weight in the body paragraphs to ensure a more balanced development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the causes from the solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'As a result', and 'For example' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the sentence 'The tendency to work long hours is common as a result, people coming home...', which lacks a clear connector between the two clauses. Overall, the flow is smooth and the reader can easily follow the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'productivity', and 'motivation'. However, there is some repetition of simple words like 'boring' and 'exercise'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or collocations. For instance, instead of 'boring activity', you could use 'monotonous routine'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'Pollutions' (should be 'Pollution') and 'helped up to concentrate' (should be 'helped us to concentrate'). These errors do not impede communication but limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'two treadmills, two cycles and one cross-trainer is provided' (should be 'are provided') and 'it is high time, we realize' (the comma is unnecessary). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentence boundaries could be clearer. The control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader, but more variety in complex structures would be beneficial for a higher band.
