Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many working individuals are reluctant to workout neither during their workdays nor during the free days. Consequently, they suffer from health issues due to physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. This primarily stems from mental exhaustion and lack of motivation, and can be effectively addressed by raising awareness and motivating individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The primary reason behind people ignoring exercise is the mental stress they experience in present times. Due to the the demanding career and unclear boundaries in personal and professional lives, many individuals can face emotional stress, which may limit their participation in recreational activities such as exercise. Moreover, most individuals lack motivation to go to gym or workout at home. As people grow older they may settle with their physical appearance and overrate the concept of physical fitness. For example, a working mother may not have enough motivation to go gym everyday. Thus, emotional exhaustion and insufficient motivation contribute to physical inactivity.

People can be persuaded to adopt a healthy lifestyle in different ways, which can also improve their mood. Governments should raise awareness of physical and mental benefits of exercise. If people were aware of the advantages of working out, they may prioritize taking out time to exercise. Furthermore, authorities should improve local infrastructure such as establish community wellness centres, and offer short-term trial passes to encourage citizens to incorporate exercise in their busy routines. For instance, Brampton local council motivates local residents to try out local wellness centres by offering one week free pass. Such measures can make a considerable impact on people's attitudes towards exercise.

In conclusion, although mental exhaustion and lack of motivation promote neglect towards exercising, it can be efficiently managed by government intervention. Authorities should raise awareness of exercising and encourage citizens to incorporate exercise in their busy routines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying why working people do not get enough exercise, citing mental stress and lack of motivation, and offering solutions such as raising awareness and improving local infrastructure. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of working mothers and the Brampton local council initiative. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in places, and some points could be explored with even greater depth to reach the highest band. Nevertheless, all prompt requirements are fully met, matching the Band 7 descriptors well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic: the introduction outlines the problem and causes, the second paragraph details the reasons for physical inactivity, the third paragraph discusses solutions, and the conclusion summarises the main points. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "Consequently," "This primarily stems from," and "Furthermore," although referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "sedentary lifestyle," "mental exhaustion," and "recreational activities." There are some minor lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as saying "reluctant to workout neither... nor" (which also contains a double negative issue) and "go gym" instead of "go to the gym." Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to allow some flexibility and precision, aligning closely with Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, the opening sentence contains a correlative error: "reluctant to workout neither... nor" should be "neither reluctant... nor" or "unwilling to work out either... or." Another error occurs in the second paragraph: "Due to the the demanding career" (repeated article) and "go gym everyday." Punctuation is generally fine, but the grammatical slips are frequent enough to prevent the score from reaching a Band 7, as they occasionally disrupt fluency.
