Student answer (Band 5.5)

A lot of working people get little or no exercise either during the working day or in their leisure time, and have health problems as a result. This essay will discuss why many working people do not get enough exercise and profer solution to the problem.

To begin, lack of exercise is detrimental to health. A lot of working people get little or no exercise either during the working day or leisure time.

This is caused by number of reasons. In the working days, they have limited or no time to do exercise.

For example, my Aunty who lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria lives very far from her office. It takes her about 3 hours to get to work everyday and her office resumes by 7 oclock in the morning and closes by 6 pm in the evening.

She wakes up by 3 am everyaday to be able to get to work on time and gets home each day by 9 pm. On getting home she is already drained and cannot think of exercising by that time of the night. During he leisure time which is mostly saturdays and Sundays, she has the family domestic acitivities to attend to.such as going to the market to shop for all the family needs for the week, do the laundry, cook for the family and go through her childrens school work. This leaves her with little or no time to exercise.

In conclusion, Offices should get gymnapsium equipments in the office environment and encourage their employees to exercise at least 1 hour a day, Working class people should endeavor to get domestic staff who would assist them in their domestic acitivities. By so doing, they would devout the major part of their leisure time to exercise.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both questions: it explains that long working hours and commuting leave little time or energy for exercise, then proposes workplace gym equipment, employer encouragement, and domestic help. The example of your aunt makes the time-pressure explanation concrete and relevant. However, the solutions are less fully developed than the reasons: for instance, the essay does not explain how employers could make daily exercise practical or whether domestic staff are affordable for most workers. The opening repeats the task’s wording rather than establishing a more specific focus, and the conclusion mainly lists proposals. Develop each solution with a brief explanation of how it would work and who could realistically benefit from it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to reasons and then solutions, and the aunt’s example is presented in a generally logical sequence. However, progression is uneven: the body paragraphs explain the causes in detail, while the solutions appear only in the conclusion, so the response does not develop both parts of the task in a balanced way. The opening repeats the prompt, and the transition “To begin” is followed by another general statement of the problem rather than a clear first reason. Some links are awkward or unclear, such as “During he leisure time” and “By so doing.” Use separate, focused paragraphs for causes and solutions, with clear links showing how each idea relates to the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “limited or no time,” “drained,” and “domestic activities” help describe the pressures on working people. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision. Examples include “profer solution,” “gymnapsium equipments,” “everyaday,” and “devout the major part,” where the intended meaning is not expressed accurately. “A lot of working people” is also repeated from the prompt rather than varied. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “propose a solution,” “install gym equipment,” and “devote more of their free time,” and proofread spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes both simple sentences and some longer structures, including the explanation beginning “On getting home” and the sentence describing weekend responsibilities. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation recur. For example, “This is caused by number of reasons” is missing an article, while “During he leisure time” has an incorrect pronoun. The sentence beginning “During” also runs into a list without clear punctuation: “to attend to.such as…” In the conclusion, the comma after “a day” creates an awkward break between two independent clauses. Check articles, pronouns, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, and use complex sentences only when their structure is controlled.
