Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir

I am writing this letter to inform you about garbage collection in my area, which is getting hot topic in our area. The garbage collectors are not doing their best as they used to do before, due to this my neighbours and I facing problems everyday.

The rubbish collection system is not doing their duty with full potential as they come anytime in a week to get garbage, there is no fixed day, Therfore, sometime people put their garbage after they come beacuse there is no fixed day and time. People are getting affected as they need to get garbage back again inside their houses, which creates bad odor and germs.

There are numerous ways which can be implemented to eradictae this problem from its roots such as we can set fixed day, date, and time for picking trash. Moreover, we can use transparent bag for organic an inorganic material which will be easier for dump trucks to identify what they need to get.

Thank you,

Yours faithfuly,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you describe irregular collection, explain the effects on residents, and propose a schedule and clearer sorting of waste. The specific consequence that people must bring rubbish back inside, leading to odour and germs, makes the problem understandable. Your suggestions are relevant, but they are not fully developed: for example, you could ask the council to publish a fixed collection timetable and explain how residents should report missed collections. The letter also needs a more consistently formal, complete presentation. You begin with “Dear sir” rather than the supplied greeting, and “Thank you” followed by “Yours faithfully” is not a fully polished closing. Overall, the purpose is clear, though some points need fuller explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, describes the collection problem and its effects, then offers solutions. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “due to this” and “Moreover” show how ideas relate. This gives the letter a coherent structure. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The first paragraph repeats “in my area,” while the second sentence beginning “The rubbish collection system…” restates the complaint before explaining it. The relationship between residents putting rubbish out after the truck has come and having to bring it back inside could also be expressed more directly. To strengthen progression, use clearer references and make each paragraph advance the complaint without repeating its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “garbage collection,” “bad odor,” “germs,” and “organic and inorganic material.” There are also attempts at more formal or precise expressions, such as “implemented” and “from its roots.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural in this context: “getting hot topic,” “full potential,” and “get garbage” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “Therfore,” “beacuse,” “eradictae,” and “faithfuly” are noticeable, and “garbage” and “rubbish” are used inconsistently. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect construction “which creates bad odor and germs” and the sentence beginning “There are numerous ways… such as…”. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “my neighbours and I facing problems” needs a finite verb (“are facing”), and “the rubbish collection system is not doing their duty” has a subject–pronoun agreement problem. The long sentence beginning “The rubbish collection system…” also joins several ideas with commas, making the structure difficult to follow. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and use a wider range of accurately controlled sentence patterns.
