Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter on behalf of the community, and expressing the disappointment regarding the garbage collecting system, which is not functioning properly.
In our community, garbage collectors used to come to collect a garbage on every other Wednesday. However, since last one month, Nobody has came pick up the rubbish, which made walking through the street almost impossible because of smell odor.
It became extremely difficult to open the doors, because of the strong odor. That also attracting the wild animals, who visit near the garbage in search of food. Moreover, flies and other small insects made our life more frustrating.
To tackle this problem effectively, I recommend you to organize a proper plan about garbage collection. For example, garbage pick up truck can come on specific day to collect the garbage from a particular area. By doing this, residents will feel safer and become aware about the regular schedule.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you would look into this matter urgently, as it requires immediate actions.
Yours faithfully,
Maruti Nandan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the failure of the collection system, explain the negative impact on the community (smell, pests, safety), and provide a logical suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific health risks posed by the pests to add more weight to your argument. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'To tackle this problem', which help the reader follow your argument. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem description to the consequences and finally to the proposed solution. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'that' in 'That also attracting') is more precise to avoid ambiguity. The structure is sound and supports the overall message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'functioning properly', 'frustrating', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'smell odor' (which is redundant) and 'made our life more frustrating' (which is slightly unnatural). You also have a few minor errors, such as 'Nobody has came' (should be 'come'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to municipal services and environmental health.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'Nobody has came pick up' (should be 'has come to pick up'), 'That also attracting' (should be 'This also attracts'), and 'become aware about' (should be 'become aware of'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, work on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verb tenses, particularly when describing past events versus ongoing situations.
