Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing to express my concern on the garbage collection system which is not working properly at it affects people badly.

Well, before garbage was collected on daily basis by the collection team. From past few months we noticed that they came only once or twice in a month.

It affects me and my neighbourhood badly as the garbage is not collected on time due to the bad odour we are not able to breathe. It also creates flies which creates many diseases. The old people also suffers a lot and childrens do not have space to play outside as people put rubbish outside the bins in the open space because bins are already full.

I would like you to check with the team what is the reason behind this and ask the team to collect the garbage on time so that people can take a sigh of breath. Or they can put more garbage bins so that individuals can put rubbish in bins and avoid any contact with heath problems due to the garbage pollution.

Thankyou for understanding and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described the failure of the collection system, explained the negative impact on the community, and provided suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific health risks or provide a more formal call to action. However, the response is clear and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'or', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more distinct to separate the problem from the proposed solution. To improve, try using a wider range of linking words like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this' to connect your arguments more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'bad odour' and 'garbage pollution' are relevant to the topic. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'take a sigh of breath' (the idiomatic expression is 'breathe a sigh of relief') and 'heath problems' (spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive use of the word 'garbage' by using synonyms like 'refuse', 'waste', or 'rubbish'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The old people also suffers' (subject-verb agreement) and 'From past few months' (preposition error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as the lack of capitalization in 'sir/madam'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure you are using the correct articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help boost your score.
