Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to bring your attention an issue that requires immediate considerationwhich is regarding the garbage picking system in my area which not only troubling me but also my neighbours.

The rubbish collection system works every week on Tuesdays but, from last two weeks we are facing issues with it as they are not doing their work on time. My garbage bins are fully loaded which basically, polluting the enviornment. Also, this unpleasant smell attracting lot of insects and stray animals which make it even worse. I am highly concerned regarding the older people who have lot of health issues and this atmosphere will trigger their heath conditions.

Moreover, the trucks sometimes create lot of mess whenever they come to collect trash. While picking up the bins they throw them anywhere and even sometimes the trash scatter on streets. However, they never clean the area and keep it like that.

I would like to suggest you that local council should arrange specific days in week for garbage picking specially in busy areas. So, that the areas should be clean.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could adress this matter at the earliest convienience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the failure of the collection system, explain the negative impact on residents and health, and provide a suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific health risks or provide more detail on how the council could improve the scheduling. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in sentence structure, such as the run-on sentence in the introduction. To improve, ensure that each sentence is clearly demarcated with appropriate punctuation. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, moving logically from the problem to the impact and finally to the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'immediate consideration' and 'at the earliest convenience' are appropriate for formal correspondence. There are some spelling errors, such as 'enviornment', 'heath', 'adress', and 'convienience', which slightly detract from the professional tone. Additionally, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'garbage picking system' instead of 'waste collection service'. Focusing on accurate spelling and more formal collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing prepositions ('bring your attention an issue'), incorrect verb forms ('is not working' vs 'are not doing'), and article usage ('the trash scatter'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for basic errors like 'Your's Sincerily' (Yours Sincerely) will also improve the accuracy of your writing.
