Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing a letter to you about garbage collection service. This system is awful progressively. This is creating pollution and many diseases. So focused on this situation and solved the problem and the people also safe diseases and pollution.
Therefore, the rubbish collection system is extremely inadequate and they not focused on this problem. All people are disturbed due to rubbish and diseases are transmitted. For many days they do not come pick up the garbage.
Furthermore, it is very emotive me and my neighbours. When we wake up early in the morning and go to walk, when I open the door then too much smell and heap garbage in front of the door. Which create safety worries for children and older residents who walk past the bins.
I am extremely requesting you, please send a special truck immediately to pick up all extra waste, the workers follow the regular weekly timetable without delays, and please available the extra large containers in our zone to handle the heavy volume waste.
I await your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the problem, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that the system is 'awful', you could provide more specific details about the nature of the failure (e.g., missed collections or broken equipment). The suggestions are relevant, but the tone is occasionally informal and lacks the professional polish expected in a formal letter to a council. To improve, ensure your ideas are fully extended with clear, logical explanations rather than relying on brief, repetitive statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the connection between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to identify exactly what 'this' or 'they' refers to in certain contexts. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would help achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate the main points effectively. You use some relevant terms like 'rubbish collection', 'pollution', and 'residents'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and unnatural collocations, such as 'emotive me' instead of 'affecting me' and 'available the extra large containers' instead of 'provide extra large containers'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and common collocations appropriate for formal correspondence. Avoid repetitive phrasing and try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for common words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'they not focused'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'people also safe diseases'), and awkward sentence construction. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, particularly the correct use of auxiliary verbs and prepositions. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb tenses will significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
