Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to discuss about some problem faced by general public about the system used for collecting rubbish/ garbage in our area. I resides near the intersection named Walness and Hurontario. One of the main problems the neighbours are facing is that the time of garbage collection and student bus is same. Therefore, there would be a risk of any injury to the children. Moreover, I believe the trucks need repair because it create annoying sound when it come.
It has the same time as school bus, as far as matter of safety is concern, parents are worried. Secondly, the wired sound it create always disturb the study of children and sleep of old people. Furthermore, it comes only on weekdays, but at that time no-one is at home so that there is delayed in throwing the garbage.
I would suggest you to please change the time of collecting the garbage from morning to afternoon, so that there will be no risk on safety of children. Moreover, I would suggest tat they should come on weekends instead of working days.
I hope this suggestions will help in resolving the issue local people are facing.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Navdeep Kahlon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the system failure, explaining the impact on the community, and suggesting solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for example, the safety concern regarding the school bus is mentioned in both the first and second paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the ideas could be more clearly distinguished and expanded upon with more specific detail rather than restating the same points. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Secondly' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'as far as matter of safety is concern'. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by varying the linking words and ensuring that sentences connect more naturally to one another.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their concerns effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'intersection' and 'resolving the issue'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'wired sound' (likely meant 'weird' or 'loud') and 'there is delayed in throwing' (should be 'a delay'). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language would be needed for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('I resides', 'it create', 'it come') and article usage errors ('the time of garbage collection and student bus is same'). While these errors are frequent, they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of the message. To improve, the writer should focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensure consistent verb tense usage, as well as refining the use of articles and prepositions.
