Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Manel Riahi , I'm currently leaving in 390 Cote - Vertu area H12IXE apartment number 206 ,I'm writing this complain regarding the rubbish system which is not working correctly in this two last months , I don't know if this because of the new staff that were deployed in our area.

I want to pay to your attention that during every collection day which is Tuesday they left the rubbish on the floor and even on the street, even the bins they through it away from the pick-up area and that makes a problems with our neighbors and that affects really our relation.

The wild animals find it as an opportunities to eat from the street.

I suggest you to speak with their supervisor to train there more regarding the policies and procedures and find a prompt solution as soon as possible.

waiting for your reply.

Your sincerely

Manel Riahi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the issue, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the impact on neighbours is mentioned but not fully elaborated upon, and the description of the rubbish collection failure could be more specific to help the council identify the root cause. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detail and ensure the purpose of the letter is clearly stated in the opening.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used, though the transitions between ideas could be smoother. You use some cohesive devices like 'even' and 'that makes', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the rubbish being left on the street and the impact on neighbours could be better linked using more sophisticated cohesive devices to improve the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'deployed', 'policies', and 'procedures'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'leaving' instead of 'living', 'complain' instead of 'complaint', and 'through' instead of 'threw'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more accurate collocations and ensuring you use the correct word forms for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('that makes a problems') and tense inconsistencies ('that were deployed'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and spacing. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, such as verb tenses and pluralization, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
