Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am a resident of Saskatoon and I am living at Pinehouse place. I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards the problems we are fascing because of irregularity and inaccuracy of the garbage collecting system in our area. I am also expecting immediate actions from our local government. I would like to explain the problems. Firstly, garbage collection vehicle not visit our area on a regular basis. It comes only 2 times a week. In result, all garbage cans overflow and garbage things spread on the floor. Secondly, when rubbish collection truck comes to collect garbage, that is not collecting cluttered things from the floor.
These issues affecting badly on our health. These rubbish things smell badly. In addition, it also became a house of mosquitoes and other insects. Many citizens are suffering from viral infection because of these insects. I would like to provide some suggestions here. You could increase the frequency of the collection of rubbish and number of trashcans. If possible, please change the trashcans with leads on that.
I hope you would look into this matter and resolve these problems on the urgent basis. Thank yo for your time and consideration of this application.
Yours sincerely,
Vaishnavi Dana.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the system failure, explaining the impact on the community, and suggesting solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of the impact could be more detailed to fully convey the severity of the situation. While the response is clear and the purpose is well-defined, it lacks the depth required for a higher band score. All parts of the task are covered, but the ideas could be extended further to demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the problem.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In addition' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive (e.g., the frequent use of 'garbage'). While the overall progression is clear, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better pronoun referencing to avoid redundancy. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a heavy reliance on basic terms like 'garbage' and 'problems'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'irregularity' and 'inaccuracy', there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'garbage things spread on the floor' and 'cluttered things'. The spelling error 'fascing' (facing) and 'leads' (lids) also detract from the overall quality. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to municipal services.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'garbage collection vehicle not visit' (missing auxiliary verb), 'In result' (incorrect prepositional phrase), and 'it also became a house of mosquitoes' (incorrect article/word choice). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but these are often marred by errors in subject-verb agreement and tense usage. Improving control over basic sentence construction will help in achieving a higher score.
