Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my regret regarding delay in a garbage collection process. I am residing on a Greenbank Street, the days allocted to this area are Tuesday and Friday. Although garbage collecters often forget to pick our junk and debris, This causes the blockage on our driveway and pedestrian path.

This issue triggered significant problems and disruptions to my neibhour, and I am not be able to park my own car on the driveway. Since every morning school buses pick-up the children from our locality, this problem caused the other people as well living around my house.

I would appreciate if you could impose the stringent rules on garbage collectors, and appropriate remedial measures should be taken to resolve this issue promptly, and have a great day.

I believe this problem will be taken for consideration as your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Gurdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The letter follows the required format and tone. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the impact on your driveway and school buses, these points could be expanded with more detail to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To improve, ensure that each point is supported by slightly more descriptive language to demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although' and 'Since' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as the sudden shift to 'have a great day' within the paragraph suggesting solutions. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your points more fluidly. Overall, the structure is sufficient for a clear, coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'remedial measures', 'stringent', and 'disruptions'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'garbage collecters' (collectors) and 'neibhour' (neighbour). Additionally, 'junk and debris' is a reasonable collocation, but 'refuse' or 'waste' would be more formal and appropriate for a letter to a council. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores. Focusing on more formal collocations will help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'I would appreciate if you could...'. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, including article usage ('a garbage collection process' should be 'the garbage collection process'), subject-verb agreement, and tense issues ('I am not be able to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and sentence boundaries. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will lead to significant improvement.
