Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to bring your attention on the obstacle with wastage collection system in the area of Shimla town where the method to gather the garbage is not working effectively. I would also like to suggest you some advice regarding this matter.

There are two days scheduled like Wednesday for recycling items and Thursday for the other garbage by city council but the lorries those are serving these duties are not performing there jobs as mentioned above timetables as it happens from last two weeks they missed to collect both recycled trash and garbage from the bins therefore it creates immense gathering of wastage since bins are totally full.

Due to this condition, I and my society people are facing problems like huge mosquitoes flying in our town which makes everyone sick also individuals are suffering with bad odour from wastage bins. This issue cannot only disturb people but also affect our neat and tidy surroundings.

I would like to request you to arrange a meeting with garbage transport management so that they can understand the rules and regulations mentioned in the contract to Complete their tasks without any inconvenience.

I hope you can understand my concerns and help us to resolve this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the issue, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the solution could be slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. You have maintained a consistent focus on the problem throughout the letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the beginning. To improve, ensure that the specific details of the 'rules and regulations' mentioned are linked more clearly to the proposed meeting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'due to this condition' and 'therefore', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'obstacle', 'timetables', and 'inconvenience' are used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'society people' (which should be 'members of my community' or 'residents') and 'gathering of wastage' (which is better expressed as 'accumulation of refuse'). Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to waste management would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'bring your attention on' (should be 'to'), 'performing there jobs' (should be 'their'), and 'as it happens from last two weeks' (should be 'as it has been happening for the last two weeks'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
