Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
Through this letter, I want to attract your attention to the problem of waste management that our residing community is facing right now. Actually from past two months, the waste collection department fails to fulfilled its duties because most of its employees were absent from their duties. They are keep skipping their shifts and only comes once in a week to pick up garbage in our area.
Because of this, garbage is being collected in our neighbourhood from pat two months. Therefore, there are lot of mosquitos on our community which are posing the risks of dangue and other communicable diseases. It will be very dangerous if these disease spread in our area especially for young kids.
Therefore, I request you to take action against this emerging problem and for that, I suggest you to conduct an internal audit of our local municipal council so that whoever is not doing his/her duty rightfully, face stringent actions. This will also set an example for the entire department not to do this again in near future. I hope you will agree with my suggestions and take some necessary steps as soon as possible. Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described the failure of the waste collection system, explained the negative impact on the community regarding health risks, and provided a clear suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the 'problems' for your neighbours to provide more depth, but overall, the task is fully covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Because of this', 'Therefore', and 'For that'. While the flow is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall message is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'waste management', 'municipal council', and 'stringent actions'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'attract your attention' (should be 'draw your attention') and 'residing community' (which is slightly unnatural). Increasing your use of more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as tense inconsistencies ('from past two months' should be 'for the past two months') and subject-verb agreement issues ('department fails to fulfilled' should be 'department has failed to fulfill'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
