Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding, to draw your attention towards the system used for rubbish collection in our local area which is not working properly.
Our local communities were facing a lot of troubles because of your staffs. Not only the adults were having problems, but also the childern and seniors who want to walk freely in our local roads. Unfortunately, beacause of your staffs the roads are mostly covered by the garbage.
Beacause of this garbage, our communities are suffered from several sever diseases like malaria, dengu, etc which is mostly caused by mosquitoes. Even one of our neighbour's child suffered from malaria and the child left us.
I recommend that you have to take stricts actions to control your staffs, and teach them a lesson. Furthermore, you can appoint a supervisor over the cleaning staffs which will manage them. Also, you can oppose fine on them if they mismanage anything.
Yours faithfully,
Jasmine Brar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the issue, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and the tone is occasionally inappropriate for a formal letter to a council. For instance, suggesting that the council should 'teach them a lesson' is overly aggressive and informal. While the task requirements are met, the depth of the response is basic, and the tone lacks the professional register expected in a formal complaint to a local authority.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the problem to the impact and finally to the suggestions. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'because of' and 'also'. Some transitions are missing or awkward, such as the opening sentence which contains a redundant phrase ('I am writing regarding, to draw your attention'). Better use of linking words would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several spelling errors, such as 'childern', 'beacause', 'sever', 'dengu', and 'stricts'. Additionally, some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'oppose fine' instead of 'impose a fine' and 'the child left us' which is an ambiguous and inappropriate way to describe a death. The range of vocabulary is limited, and these errors occasionally distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('our communities are suffered', 'which is mostly caused'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and spelling prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
