Student answer (Band 6.0)

I am a resident of your neighborhood and wants to bring a major complaint faced by all the local society. The problem is the the collection of garbage.

In the recent days this issue has become a nightmare for all the people as the workers are not collecting the waste properly causing the invitation of small insects. There are a lot of mosquito at night which creates a barrier if child wants to play in the ground as well for the elderly people to go for a walk.

There are a lot of people who got infected with malaria and avoid to future we need to step in and stop that cause of the diseases

I would suggest the authority to look into this matter as soon as possible and make sure that the area is clean well and sanitize well so that any insect and files are killed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the system failure, explaining the impact on the community, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'sanitize' the area is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details, such as requesting a change in the collection schedule or the provision of more bins. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the structure is quite brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited. You rely on simple sentence structures and lack transition words to connect your ideas smoothly (e.g., using 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition'). The progression of ideas is clear, but the overall flow feels a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words would significantly enhance the readability of your letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some repetitive phrasing, such as 'a lot of', and there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'causing the invitation of small insects' (which is unnatural) and 'clean well and sanitize well'. Using more precise collocations like 'infestation of insects' or 'sanitary measures' would demonstrate a stronger command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'wants to bring' should be 'want to bring', and 'the the' is a repetition error. You also have issues with subject-verb agreement and sentence structure, such as 'avoid to future we need to step in'. While you attempt some complex ideas, the execution is often faulty. Focusing on basic accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
