Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam

I hope this email finds you well

I am writing this email on behalf my society to drag your attention on few issues our society is facing . There are numerous challenges which are faced by my society members but particularly garbage collection is major issues for these days .

To begin with , usually the garbage truck comes twice the week and make sure there is no rubbish left behind but from past 2 weeks we have noticed there is no truck coming on designated days and bins are overflowing . However, when our committee member investigated on this issue we found out that someone was marking this area as completed without coming to this area .

Apart from this , the overflowing garbage has became a concerning issue for us because it can lead to several disease such as malaria , dengue and many more . Additionally, the whole area of society is smelling like food waste and stinking making the situation worse .

To conclude , I really appreciate if you can look into this matter and get the area cleaned at the earliest convenience . Also, if you can make sure the garbage truck reassume its service to this area as it will support to keep this area clean .

Thank you

Your truly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the failure of the collection system, explained the negative impact on the community, and provided a clear suggestion for resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on the specific health risks or provide a more detailed suggestion regarding how the council should monitor the collection service in the future. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Apart from this', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor punctuation issues and some slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'drag your attention on few issues'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother to enhance the overall readability of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'overflowing', 'garbage collection', and 'designated days'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reassume its service' (should be 'resume') and 'drag your attention' (should be 'draw your attention'). Additionally, 'became' is used where 'has become' is required. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage and better attention to verb forms to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('on behalf of my society', 'the garbage truck'), incorrect verb tenses ('garbage has became'), and minor punctuation errors. The sentence structure is generally functional, but there is a lack of more sophisticated grammatical control. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are frequent errors that prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of accuracy.
