Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concern about the rubbish collection system is not working correctlly in our society. The garbage accumulater trucks have been comming usually every two days in a week in our area. Since the last four week, the attendance of grabage lorries in this location would be remarkablly low.

This situation causes many difficulties and problems in my neighbourhood which affect very awful to me and my neighbours. Because if the garbage is not collected on certain period of time which causes serious health probleams.

This is the reasonable issue for our local area and you have to take responsible steps to overcome this issue. In my suggetions, I would advice to local councile that they have to hire more people and trucks so in such emergency they can use them effectivlly.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the issue, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention health problems, you do not elaborate on specific consequences, such as pests or unpleasant odors. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the expression of ideas is occasionally hindered by imprecise language. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific details to demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the use of 'Because if' at the start of a sentence is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in light of this,' would help improve the logical progression of your ideas and make the text feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies that detract from the professional tone. Words like 'correctlly,' 'accumulater,' 'comming,' 'probleams,' and 'councile' are misspelled. Furthermore, phrases like 'attendance of garbage lorries' and 'reasonable issue' are not natural collocations in this context. While your meaning is clear, the frequent errors in spelling and word formation suggest a need for more careful proofreading and a focus on learning standard collocations related to formal correspondence and local government issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an attempt to use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, such as 'the rubbish collection system is not working correctlly' (missing 'that'), 'Since the last four week' (should be 'weeks'), and 'affect very awful to me' (incorrect verb/adjective usage). These errors are noticeable and occasionally make the reader pause, though they do not completely impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical precision.
