Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to you for complaining about the system of garbage collection on the 47th ave NW is not working properly.
I am the resident of the Empirepark Building which is located on 47th ave NW in our city. My neighbours and my flat residents are facing problems with garabage collection authority. When they start collecting rubbish from our area they are visiting two times in a week but since 3 weeks they are taking rubbish one time in a week and sometimes we have to wait for them for 1 to 2 weeks. After asking several times to driver of the truck I did not got my satisfactory asnwers from them.
47th ave is the most busiest avenue of the city because it is near to the city centre that is why we have lots of garabage over the weekend. If garabge collection did not happen twice in a week it will cause lots of diseses and increase numbers of mosquitoes. I am requesting to you to review of the relevant authority and provide best training to them.
I hope this letter finds you well and my neighbours and my flat residents have clean and tidy our area.
Best regards,
Krish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the issue, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'provide best training' is a bit vague. To improve, you should provide more specific details about the desired outcome, such as requesting a formal investigation or a change in the collection schedule. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands the situation, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'that is why', 'because'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, such as the jump from the driver interaction to the location of the avenue. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would help elevate the score. Overall, the message is easy to follow, which is consistent with Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'resident', 'authority', and 'satisfactory'. However, there are several spelling errors ('garabage', 'diseses', 'asnwers') and some awkward collocations, such as 'most busiest' (a double superlative) and 'provide best training'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise vocabulary. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and ensuring accurate spelling of common terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter to you for complaining' (should be 'to complain'), 'I did not got' (should be 'I did not get'), and 'If garabge collection did not happen' (should be 'does not happen'). These errors occur frequently but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of prepositions and articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score.
