Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the system that used for waste colloction in our area. It does not working wisely.

The rubbish colloction system has some issues such as It needs more electercity, sometimes due to a lot of waste it stucks which is risky.

Moreover, I and my neighbours face many difficulties because of this waste colloction machine. It is very noisy that is not good for our childern and elders. Also, a very bad smell comes from inside that polluted the fresh air.

I want to share some solutions. This system should be in the empty area because it will be less noisy for us and if it will far, it would be good for our kids like sometimes they play outside and this machine is not safe for them. Also, different tank should be displayed with lid because lid will help to spread out bad smell in environment.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you report that the collection system gets stuck when there is a lot of waste, describe noise and unpleasant smells affecting residents, and suggest moving it and providing covered bins. The purpose is clear and the formal opening and closing suit a letter to the council. This meets the task well, although some details are not fully explained. For example, the claim that the system needs more electricity is not connected to a specific collection failure, and the proposed move to an empty area could be made more practical by explaining where or how the council should relocate it. Clarifying the problem and developing each recommendation would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, describes its effects, offers solutions, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Also,” and “I look forward to hearing from you” guide the reader. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “if it will far” does not clearly show how distance relates to children’s safety, and the move from the machine’s noise to the suggestion about its location could be linked more explicitly. Use clearer references and connect each proposed action directly to the problem it addresses to make the cohesion more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main concerns, including “waste,” “rubbish collection system,” “noisy,” and “bad smell.” However, the range is limited, and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “colloction,” “electercity,” “stucks,” and “spread out bad smell.” Some expressions are also unnatural for a formal council letter, including “working wisely” and “different tank should be displayed.” These choices may make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Build a more precise set of phrases for collection failures, environmental effects, and practical requests, and check spelling carefully. More accurate collocations would help your ideas sound clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including a reason clause in “because it will be less noisy for us” and a conditional idea about the machine being far away. The main message remains understandable, but control is uneven: several sentences contain errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, or sentence construction. For example, “It does not working” needs a correctly formed verb, while “sometimes due to a lot of waste it stucks” has an unclear structure and verb form. “It is very noisy that is not good” also needs a clearer clause connection. Practise accurate present-tense forms and build longer sentences around one clear main clause; this will improve readability while retaining your attempts at complex grammar.
