Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to bring your attention toward the problem me and my neighbourhood is facing with unorganised weekly garbage collection.

In recent weeks the garbage collecting profesionals are not picking compost every week. Initialy, it use to be garbage and recycle were disposed alternatively every week but compost waste was picked up every week However now garbage collecting truck is not taking our food waste every seven days.

This is causing several effects. Primarily, the collection of organic waste for more than a week is very unhygenic become the perfect habitate for mosquitos and variour insects in the neighbourhood.

It would be really appreciated if food waste get picked up every week as use to be. Additionally, the massive yearly household garbage collection should be done twice an year.

I hope my request will be conciderd very soon to protect the town from possible desises caused by longtime stored food waste.

Yours Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: the collection problem is identified as missed weekly food-waste pickups, you explain the hygiene and insect concerns, and you ask for weekly collection to resume. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The effects on neighbours are mentioned generally, without a concrete example of how the stored waste affects daily life, and the suggestion that “massive yearly household garbage collection should be done twice an year” is not explained or clearly connected to the main problem. To strengthen the response, clarify which collection service needs changing and add a specific practical detail, such as a reliable collection day or a temporary extra pickup.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, describes the collection change, explains its effects, and makes requests before closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “In recent weeks,” “Primarily,” and “Additionally” guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. The shift from missed compost collection to the request for twice-yearly household garbage collection is abrupt, and “This is causing several effects” is followed by only one main effect. The opening sentence is also difficult to process because several ideas are compressed together. Use clearer transitions to show how each request relates to the problem, and make the progression between the complaint, consequences, and proposed remedy more direct.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “compost,” “organic waste,” “collection,” and “neighbourhood,” so the reader can understand the subject. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “I would like to bring your attention” and “It would be really appreciated.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate or unnatural word combinations are noticeable, including “profesionals,” “unhygenic,” “habitate,” and “conciderd.” Some phrases are also imprecise: “garbage collecting professionals” is less natural than “waste collection workers,” while “massive yearly household garbage collection” is unclear. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make the complaint sound more precise and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can generally follow the main message. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is uneven, with errors that sometimes make the wording difficult to interpret. For example, “the problem me and my neighbourhood is facing” has incorrect clause structure and subject–verb agreement, while “it use to be garbage and recycle were disposed alternatively” combines verb forms and clauses inaccurately. In “if food waste get picked up every week as use to be,” the conditional and verb forms are also faulty. Practise forming clear clauses with consistent tense and agreement, such as “The collection used to alternate between general waste and recycling, while food waste was collected weekly.” Proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation as well.
