Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to bring your attention regarding poor garbage collection service in my local area.
I seems this issue from last week as it is not operating on a regular basis. Before, collection service come on time, however, before last week they did not show up owing to this all colony memebers are suffering from overflowing of bins.
It is affected me and my colony people in several ways. Firstly, it creates unpleasant smell due to this it is hard for people especially youngsters to go outside for playing. Secondly, it could lead abundance of health problems such as fever, infection, flue and so on as it is attracting mosquito, insects and other stray animals.
This problem bring your immediate attention as it is not a matter of one person , it is concern of full colony. I would give you some advice such as held inspection every month along with put some strict rules on rubbish service team too.
I look forward to hearing you soon.
Yours Faithfully,
Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it reports irregular collections and overflowing bins, explains effects on residents, and proposes action. The impact is supported with relevant examples, including unpleasant smells, difficulty for children to play outside, and possible health problems. Your request for monthly inspections and stricter rules also gives the council a clear direction. To make the response more fully developed, specify the collection failure more precisely—for example, how often the service has been missed or which bins are affected—and explain how your proposed measures would improve reliability. The purpose and concern remain clear throughout, although some details are expressed generally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, useful sequence: the opening identifies the complaint, the next paragraph describes the service failure, and later paragraphs cover its effects and possible solutions. Signposting such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” helps readers follow the examples, while the closing maintains the letter format. Some links between ideas are less smooth, particularly “Before, collection service come on time, however, before last week they did not show up,” where the timeline is difficult to follow. The sentence beginning “This problem bring your immediate attention” also moves abruptly into the suggestions. Use clearer transitions and divide or connect these ideas more naturally to make the progression consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “garbage collection service,” “overflowing of bins,” “unpleasant smell,” and “health problems.” These choices make the complaint understandable, and terms such as “inspection” and “strict rules” suit a formal request. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “bring your attention regarding,” “suffering from overflowing,” and “abundance of health problems.” There are also spelling errors such as “memebers” and “flue.” These issues make the language less natural and precise, though the main message remains clear. Focus on common formal collocations and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including a sentence explaining the consequences of missed collections and another listing effects on residents. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. Examples include “I seems this issue from last week,” “collection service come on time,” and “This problem bring your immediate attention,” which show problems with verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. The sentence joining the missed collection to the overflowing bins also needs clearer punctuation and structure. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and subject–verb agreement, then build longer sentences from correctly formed clauses. More reliable control of these basics would make your meaning easier to process.
