Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover both charts and identify the broad pattern that appliance ownership generally rose while weekly housework hours fell. Several figures are reported accurately, including washing-machine ownership and the decline in housework from 50 to about 11 hours. However, the overview mainly describes what the charts contain rather than summarising their key trends. There are also important data errors: refrigerators reached about 55% in 1940 and 90% in 1960, not 90% in 1940 followed by 100% from 1960; vacuum-cleaner ownership was about 50% in 1940, not 60%. The final housework figure is approximately 11, rather than 10. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the contrasting trends and check each comparison against the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a general paragraph, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. This helps the reader distinguish the two charts, and time markers such as “in 1920” and “ultimately in 2019” provide some sequencing. However, progression within the appliance paragraph is difficult to follow because several figures and years are crowded into long sentences, with little punctuation. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “To begin with,” and “Eventually” are repetitive or do not clearly signal the relationship between points. The overview also repeats the chart contents instead of guiding the reader through the main comparisons. Use shorter, clearly punctuated comparisons and organise the appliance trends together before contrasting them with housework.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “appliances,” and “hours of housework,” so the subject is generally clear. However, the range of trend language is limited, and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural: “price of time spent,” “the percentage stop on,” and “remain same on” do not describe the data clearly. Repeated use of “use” and “percentage” also makes the account less precise. Some word-form and spelling issues, such as “house hold” and “905” for 90%, further reduce clarity. Build a small set of accurate verbs and collocations for describing change, such as “rose to,” “fell slightly,” “levelled off,” and “accounted for,” and check that each phrase fits the figure being described.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to connect events across time, for example in “after that in 1960” and “in 1980-2000,” but most sentences rely on simple patterns, and longer sentences are often difficult to control. Errors in tense, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries occur frequently: “The graph illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the percentage was remain same” combines incompatible verb forms. Missing full stops and commas also make the appliance section hard to parse. These problems sometimes obscure the intended comparisons, even though the reader can usually identify the general meaning. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simple comparative structures first, then combine ideas using clauses such as “while” or “whereas,” with clear punctuation.
