cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given line graph illustrates the changes in ownership of electronic items and the time period spent doing housework in households in a country between 1920 and 2019.

As it can be seen that thare was an upward trend of the households who had refrigerator while there was also increasing trend in the proportion of families who had vacuum. In addition, people having washing maching had also a positive trend but steady.

It is clear that the percentage of households who had the refrigerator increased rapidly over time which ended at about 100%. Furthermore, proportion of families having the vacuum had also positive trends but at moderate pace which was exactly the same, at 100%. In addition, users of washing machine were increased gradually and reached at almost 65%. So, there were positive trends in the proportion of all householda but there was a dramatic increase in the proportion who had refrigerator. However, percentage of households having vacuum were also more but increased at the pace less than the refrigerator's houses. people with washing machines were rise but at slow pace.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the broad rise in ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, and you note that refrigerators reached about 100%. However, the response reports only the appliance trends and omits the second chart entirely: there is no account of housework hours falling from 50 to about 11 per week. Several details are also inaccurate or unclear. Washing-machine ownership ended at about 75%, not “almost 65%,” and the response does not mention that refrigerator ownership began at around 2% or that vacuum-cleaner ownership reached 100% later. The overview is repetitive and does not clearly select the main features across both charts. To improve, summarise both measures and support the overview with accurate start and end points and key changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction is followed by general trends and then further details. Linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Furthermore,” and “However” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is weak because the same appliance trends are repeated several times, while the housework chart is not integrated at all. The overview and detail are not clearly separated, and some connections are confusing—for example, “So, there were positive trends in the proportion of all householda” is followed by another restatement of the same point. Organise the response into a concise overview and a paragraph comparing the key figures for all four series; use linking words only where they clarify a real contrast or sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “proportion,” “increased rapidly,” and “gradually,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is repetitive, especially through repeated use of “positive trend” and “proportion,” and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “people having washing maching” and “the refrigerator’s houses.” There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “thare,” “householda,” and “maching.” These choices reduce precision when describing ownership and comparisons. Build a more varied set of accurate terms, such as “ownership,” “share of households,” “rose,” “levelled off,” and “remained stable,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” but control is inconsistent. For example, “As it can be seen that thare was…” combines an unsuitable introductory structure with “that,” while “users of washing machine were increased gradually” uses an incorrect passive form. Agreement and number are also problematic in “percentage … were” and “people … had,” and the sentence beginning “So” runs through several ideas without clear punctuation. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate comparison sentences using forms such as “ownership increased” or “the percentage rose,” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
