Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graphs illustrates the changes in ownership of washing machine, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and total time spent doing house chores in one country between the time period of 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it is clear that ownership of all three appliances increased considerably. The ownership of refrigerator increased dramatically from almost 0% to 100% while vacuum cleaner also increased steadily to 100%. The proportion of households owned washing machines decreased in 1980. Whereas, the total time spent decreased within the period.

The proportion of ownership of refrigerator was 0% in 1920 and it increased to 52% in 1940. While in 1960, it increased dramatically to 90% and it reached to 100% in 1980, remained constant in 2000 and 2019. However, the proportion of washing machine made up 40% in 1920, it's ownership increased to 60% and 70% in 1940 and 1960 respectively. While in 1980, it decreased to 51% and increased in 2000 and 2019 again. Whereas, the ownership of vaccum cleaner increased dramatically from 30% to 100% during the time period of [redacted phone].

Now turning towards the total time spent, the number of hours per household weekly made up 50 hours in 1920 while the time decreased continuously and made up 32 hours and 20 hours in 1940 and 1960 respectively while it remained constant at 12 hours weekly in 1980 and 2000 and decreased to 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. Several key figures are reported accurately, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. However, some details are inaccurate or incomplete. Washing-machine ownership fell to about 65% in 1980, not 51%, and then rose to 70% in 2000 and 75% in 2019; the final increases are not quantified. Housework was about 15 hours in both 1980 and 2000, rather than 12. The overview could also compare the appliances more precisely, noting that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners levelled off at 100%, while washing machines remained below that level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing appliance ownership and housework time. The sequence within the appliance paragraph is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Now turning towards” help signal shifts. This meets the criterion’s expectation of coherent organisation, with some flexibility in linking. However, repeated sentence openings with “While” and “Whereas” sometimes create awkward or incomplete links, as in “While in 1960, it increased…” and “Whereas, the ownership…”. Use these connectors only when the clauses are properly joined, and vary the transitions. Grouping the appliance trends more deliberately would also make comparisons clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “proportion,” “increased dramatically,” “remained constant,” and “decreased continuously.” These choices allow you to describe the main trends and make comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. There is some attempt at more formal reporting language, although a few expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “total time spent doing house chores” and “made up 50 hours.” Spelling errors in “vaccum” and the inconsistent form “house chores” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and consistent terminology, such as “hours spent on housework” and “accounted for.” This would add flexibility and precision without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including time clauses and contrasts, and the main information remains understandable. However, some errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The line graphs illustrates” should be “The line graphs illustrate,” while “The proportion of households owned washing machines” needs a structure such as “The proportion of households owning washing machines.” The sentence beginning “While in 1960…” is also not properly connected to the preceding clause. There are further issues with possessives and punctuation in “it's ownership,” which should be “its ownership.” Work on producing complete, accurately linked clauses and checking subject–verb agreement; greater control of these patterns would make your range more effective.
