cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs illustrate data of a country from 1920 to 2019, which compare the proportion of households with electrical devices and the amount of working hours in households.

Overall, there was a significant growth in the ownership of all three appliances, while the number of hours decreased considerably over the given time period. The proportion for vacuum clearner hit the peak in final year.

Regarding the ownership of appliances, refrigerator stood from 0% in 1920 to 100% in 2000. Whereas, 40% of household contained washing machine in 1920 and after a few fluctuations approximately 75% household had it in 2019. Vacuum cleaner started at 30% in 1920 and after constant growth it reached highest percentage in 2019.

On the other hand, there was a downward trend in the number of hours throughout the period. In initial year there was highest number of hours about 50 per week. While, there was a gradual decrease over the given years and in 2019 it reached its lowest level approximately 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You provide a clear overview of the main contrast: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework hours fell. You also report several relevant figures, including washing-machine ownership at 40% initially and about 75% in 2019, and housework declining from around 50 to 10 hours. The account is broadly accurate, but some details are over-generalised or incomplete. For example, refrigerators reached 100% by 1980, not 2000, and vacuum-cleaner ownership rose to 100% by 2000 and then remained there; it did not first reach its peak in 2019. The washing-machine trend also includes a dip around 1980, so “a few fluctuations” could be made more precise. More accurate comparisons across the appliance series would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, appliance details, and housework hours. Its progression from the overall trends to specific categories is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Overall,” “Regarding,” and “On the other hand” help guide the reader. The final paragraph also keeps the housework information together. Some linking is less effective: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment, and “While” is similarly used to introduce an incomplete clause. The appliance paragraph would be more cohesive if the three series were compared directly rather than reported in separate, loosely connected statements. Overall, the organisation is logical, but more controlled sentence links and clearer comparisons would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “ownership,” “downward trend,” and “gradual decrease,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some attempt at more formal reporting language, but a few choices are inaccurate or awkward: “working hours” can suggest employment rather than housework, and “refrigerator stood from 0%” is not a natural collocation. “Vacuum clearner” is misspelled, and “hit the peak” is less appropriate for a formal report than “reached its highest level.” The repeated use of “percentage” and “hours” also limits flexibility. To improve, use precise chart language such as “the share of households owning…” and vary verbs like “rose,” “climbed,” and “levelled off” where the data supports them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence with “while” and the time clauses describing changes. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. “40% of household contained” needs a plural noun and agreement (“households contained”), while “75% household had it” also needs a plural form and a clearer construction. “Whereas” and “While” are used as sentence openings without complete main clauses, creating fragments. Articles are also missing in “refrigerator stood” and “in initial year.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the trends, but they reduce accuracy. Practise complete clause structures after contrast linkers and check articles, plural nouns, and subject–verb agreement.
