cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line charts illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, by looking at the line chart the refrigerator and vaccum cleaner had highest users whereas for washing machine had less users compared to them. The number of housework per week, per household has been decreased over the period.

In 1920, the refrigerator increased significantly and it has reached to 100 percentage over the timeline. The vaccum cleaner rose considerably from 30 to 90 percentag. Moreover, the washing machine increased marginally from 40 percentage to 70 percentage and it dropped suddenly from 1960 to 1980. After that has started rising again.

On the other hand, in 1920, the users of electrical appliances were more compared to 2019. It has rapidly fell from 50% to 20% from 1920 to 1960.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad contrast that appliance ownership rose while housework time fell, but the report only partially covers the chart and contains a major misreading: “In 1920, the refrigerator increased significantly” should describe a rise from about 2% in 1920 to 100% by 1980, not a change beginning in 1920. The overview also says refrigerators and vacuum cleaners had the “highest users,” which is unclear and does not accurately summarise their differing trajectories. The housework figures are only partly reported, and the final comparison incorrectly says appliance use was greater in 1920 than in 2019. The response is 123 words, below the required 150; the 23 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Add accurate key figures and comparisons, and complete the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and phrases such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently logical: the final paragraph shifts to housework but begins with an inaccurate statement about appliance users, making the relationship between the ideas confusing. Some references are also unclear, as in “After that has started rising again,” where the subject is omitted. Organise the details by chart or by clear time periods, and use linking phrases only when they accurately signal the relationship between points. This would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased significantly,” “rose considerably,” “dropped” and “rapidly fell.” This gives you a basic range for reporting changes. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear: “highest users” does not describe household ownership, and “number of housework” is not a natural way to refer to hours. There are also spelling errors in “vaccum” and “percentag,” and repeated use of “increased” limits precision. Choose terms that match the data, such as “ownership,” “proportion of households” and “hours spent on housework,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a time clause beginning “After that.” However, errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “The line charts illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “for washing machine had less users” is structurally incomplete. In “After that has started rising again,” the sentence lacks a clear subject and auxiliary structure. The opening sentence also needs parallel phrasing for “ownership” and “the amount of time.” Practise forming complete clauses with clear subjects and consistent verb tenses, then check agreement and articles before submitting.
