Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the student attempts to describe the trends in both charts, the analysis is superficial and lacks a clear overview or summary of the main features. The data points provided are often inaccurate or confusingly presented (e.g., referring to hours of housework as 'percentages'). The response lacks a clear comparison between the two trends, which is a key requirement of the task. To improve, the student should ensure all data is accurately transcribed and provide a clear, concise summary of the overall trends observed across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often repetitive (e.g., 'the percentage of...'). There is a lack of linking words to connect ideas or contrast the two charts effectively. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences is disjointed. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of linking words such as 'in contrast,' 'furthermore,' or 'consequently' to guide the reader through the information and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on the word 'percentage' and 'households.' There are several spelling errors, such as 'inownership,' 'ampunt,' 'appliciance,' and 'uper.' The student struggles to use precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'declined,' or 'remained stable.' The vocabulary is just about adequate to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on learning synonyms for common verbs and nouns related to data description would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('both charts shows'), incorrect verb tenses, and punctuation errors. The sentence structures are simple and repetitive, with little attempt at complex sentences. There are also instances of incomplete sentences and unclear phrasing, such as 'aomething.' These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that punctuation is used correctly. Practicing the use of complex structures, such as relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, would also help improve the grammatical range.
