Student answer (Band 7.0)

The first line graph illustrates the percentage of households that owned three different types of electronic appliances over a 99-year old period, while the second shows the number of hours spent on household chores per week during the same period.

Overall, ownership of all three appliance increased while the amount of time spent on household chores decreased considerably.

In 1920, which was the first year recorded, almost no one owned a refrigerator, whilst a third of people had a vacuum cleaner and four out of ten had a washing ma hine. This changed drastically over the next decades, with almost every household possessing a fridge by 1980. Indeed, by 1960, refrigerator ownership had already surpassed that of the other two appliances, making the most commonly owned appliance. By the final year, 2019, every household both a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner. Washing machines, however, which had been the least common, with only three-quarters of households owning one.

Over the same period, the numbermod hours spent on household chores fell from 50 hours per week to approximately 10. This decline was particularly steep during the first few decades, after which the rate of decrease became more gradual from 1980 onwards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from both charts. You successfully identified the trends in appliance ownership and the inverse relationship with housework time. However, the description of the washing machine data in the final paragraph is incomplete and grammatically confusing, as it states 'only three-quarters of households owning one' without clarifying the timeframe or the trend, which leaves the data under-developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points mentioned are fully integrated into complete, logical sentences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'while,' 'indeed,' and 'however' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from the appliance trends to the housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. To improve, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, the final sentence about washing machines lacks a clear connection to the previous data, making the transition feel slightly abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'drastically,' 'surpassed,' and 'gradual' to describe trends. There are a few minor errors, such as 'numbermod' (a typo for 'number of') and 'both' used as a verb instead of 'owned.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied collocations related to data description would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening complex sentence and the use of 'while' and 'which' clauses. However, there are several grammatical slips, including '99-year old period' (should be '99-year period'), 'ma hine' (spelling error), and the sentence 'every household both a refrigerator' (incorrect verb usage). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and basic spelling to improve accuracy.
