Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the task by describing the trends in appliance ownership and housework time. However, the data interpretation is frequently inaccurate and confusing. For instance, the claim that refrigerator ownership was 'about zero percent' in 1920 is not clearly supported by the visual data, and the description of the trends is often contradictory or difficult to follow (e.g., mentioning '18980s'). The main features are not clearly highlighted, and the comparison between the two charts is weak. The response lacks a clear overview, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1. The information provided is often imprecise, making it difficult for the reader to understand the actual trends shown in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by unclear referencing and confusing sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and sometimes mechanical way, such as 'where as' and 'however', but they do not always create a smooth flow between sentences. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult to track which appliance or time period is being discussed. The overall structure lacks a clear introduction and a cohesive summary, which hinders the reader's ability to follow the information logically.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'sue' instead of 'use', 'Initin' instead of 'Initially', and 'raides' instead of 'rose'. These errors occasionally impede communication, as the reader has to guess the intended meaning. The vocabulary used is basic and lacks the precision required to describe data trends effectively. There is little evidence of an attempt to use less common lexical items or to vary the language used to describe changes, such as 'surged' or 'declining', which are used inconsistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, tense usage, and sentence construction. For example, 'the use of the all appliances had been raised' and 'the trend keep on declining' demonstrate significant control issues. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces and incorrect capitalization. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty, leading to confusion. The majority of sentences contain errors, which frequently strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning of the data being presented.
