IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph compares the percentage of households owning different electrical appliance such as Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner, whereas second line graph depicts the number of hours of week spent on housework from the year 1920 to the year 2019.
Overall, it is apparent that there was a significant rise in percentage of households having Refrigerator, whereas percentage of housholds owning Vacuum cleaner experienced steady growth throughout the period of years.
To begin with, in year 1920 the percentage of households owning Refrigerator accounted for only 3%, subsequently from 1920 to 1980 there was considerable upward trend and remained unchanged from the year 1980 to 2019 with approximately 100% of household having Refrigerator. Ownership of Vacuum clenaer showed steady growth from the year 1920 to year 2000 and remained steady afterwards at 100%.
On the other hand ownership of Washing machine experienced fluctuation throughout the period of years and accounted for 70% household owning Washing machine in year 2019, whereas in the second line graph it is notable that there has been a major downward trend in number of hours spent on housework per week from year 1920 to 1960 but eventually it experienced gradual fall from the year 1960 to year 2019 and noted for only 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided a clear overview. You covered all three appliances and the trend for housework hours. The data is generally accurate, such as noting the 3% starting point for refrigerators and the final 10-hour figure for housework. To improve, ensure you make more explicit comparisons between the categories rather than just describing them sequentially. For instance, you could highlight that while appliance ownership reached near-saturation, the time spent on housework dropped inversely. The report is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the appliances more effectively to facilitate comparison. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the progression of information is easy to follow, and the use of cohesive devices is sufficient to maintain a logical flow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant rise,' 'steady growth,' and 'fluctuation.' There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'housholds' and 'clenaer,' which are distracting but do not impede communication. You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'percentage of households owning,' which could be varied with synonyms like 'adoption rates' or 'prevalence.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in spelling, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'sophisticated.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' to contrast data points. There are several grammatical slips, including missing articles (e.g., 'in year 1920' instead of 'in the year 1920') and minor punctuation issues. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'noted for only 10 hours,' which is not standard usage. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement, as well as refining the phrasing of data descriptions to sound more natural.
