Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, including the trends for appliances and the decrease in housework hours. However, the data reporting is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, stating the refrigerator 'suddenly increased from 0% to 90% in 1960' is a misinterpretation of the timeline, and the description of the washing machine's trend is disjointed. While the overall trend is identified, the lack of precision in reporting figures and the failure to clearly contrast the relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework limits the development of the response. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that the relationship between the two charts is explicitly highlighted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'went remind constant' and 'proceeded at 60%' are confusing and disrupt the flow of information. The transition between the appliance data and the housework hours is abrupt, lacking a clear linking sentence to connect the two datasets. While there is an attempt at logical progression, the frequent errors in referencing and the awkward phrasing make the overall structure feel disjointed. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'owned households usage', 'signicantly increased', and 'went remind constant'. The student relies on a limited set of verbs to describe trends, such as 'increased' or 'went up', which leads to repetition. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'surged', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable', and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('refrigerator and vacuum cleaner was'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence construction ('washing machine starting point was highest one'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the misuse of prepositions and articles is noticeable throughout. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence structure and proofreading for basic agreement errors would be beneficial.
