cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given line graph compares the percentage of households with three electric appliances between 1920 and 2019. And the other line graph compares number of hours of housework per week, per household from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of houses with refrigerator had the greatest growth, while that of vacuum cleaner had a steady growth and that of washing machine least growth. Moreover, the number of hours over a week in each household has a steady decline over the period.

The percentage of change in ownership of refrigerator had a rapid increase initially till 1960, which then changes the pace from 90 to 100 between 1960 to 2019. The percentage of household with vacuum cleaner rose steadily from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2000, which then remain constant for another 20 years. Houses with washing machine was a fluctuating trend started with 40% in 1920 and ended at about 75% in 2019.

In 1920, the hours spend on housework per week was 50 hours, which then experienced a dip to 20% till 1960. Afterwards it had relatively marginal degrowth till 2019 for a period of 60 years that started from 1960 from 20 hours to around 10 hours at the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three appliances and the housework hours, making relevant comparisons. However, there are some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, you state the washing machine had a 'fluctuating trend', but the graph shows a generally upward trajectory with a brief plateau. Additionally, you mention the housework hours dipped to '20%' in 1960, but the unit on the graph is 'hours', not a percentage. To improve, ensure you carefully distinguish between units (percentage vs. hours) and focus on describing the overall trajectory more precisely rather than using vague terms like 'least growth'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Afterwards' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner in the third paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some sentences are slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more fluid and less reliant on simple list-like structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuating', 'marginal', and 'constant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'marginal degrowth' is not standard academic English; 'gradual decline' would be more appropriate. You also use 'changes the pace' in a way that is slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, you need to incorporate more precise, topic-specific collocations and avoid non-standard phrasing to achieve a higher score. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The percentage of households with vacuum cleaner rose steadily from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2000, which then remain constant...'. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('which then remain constant' should be 'remained') and missing articles ('the percentage of houses with refrigerator' should be 'the refrigerator'). Additionally, 'hours spend on housework' should be 'hours spent'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for verb tense consistency and article usage.
